Introduction to AirPlay 2 and Control4 Ryff

Introduction to AirPlay 2 and Control4 Ryff

What is Control4 Ryff?

Ryff is ADI | Snap One’s audio streaming platform built into Control4 controllers and compatible Triad and Episode audio devices.

At a high level, Ryff:

  • Is the Control4 music streaming system
  • Supports native music services such as Pandora and TIDAL
  • Provides synchronized multiroom audio across Control4 zones
  • Can be used independently through the Ryff mobile app

When Ryff is referenced in Control4 documentation, it refers to the audio system that manages music playback and distribution throughout the home.

What Is AirPlay 2?

AirPlay 2 is Apple’s wireless audio technology built into iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

AirPlay 2 allows a customer to:

  • Play audio from any app on their Apple device
  • Tap the AirPlay icon and select available speakers
  • Stream audio over the home network without additional Control4 setup on the device

In a Control4 system, AirPlay 2 allows Control4 rooms to appear as selectable speakers directly in iOS, alongside Apple devices such as HomePods and Apple TVs.

Why Customers Ask for AirPlay 2

Customers typically request AirPlay 2 because it is simple and familiar. Common reasons include:

  • They want to play music directly from their phone or tablet
  • They do not want to set up or manage separate streaming services
  • They want to use one interface for the entire home
  • They want to group Control4 rooms with HomePods or Apple TVs

From the customer’s perspective, the experience is straightforward: “I start music on my phone, tap one button, and it plays through the house.”

Pro Tip: AirPlay 2 streams must always be started from an Apple device.

Control4 cannot initiate an AirPlay 2 stream. The customer must begin playback from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Once playback starts, Control4 can:

  • Display track information and artwork
  • Control volume, play, pause, and skip
  • Share the stream to other Control4 rooms

If a customer asks why they cannot start AirPlay from a Control4 touchscreen or remote, this is the reason.

ShairBridge vs. AirPlay 2

Older Control4 systems may still use ShairBridge, which was based on the original AirPlay protocol. ShairBridge is considered legacy technology. AirPlay 2 is the current and recommended solution.

ShairBridge and AirPlay 2 can exist in the same project, but this results in duplicate speakers appearing in the iOS AirPlay list and can confuse customers. When possible, AirPlay 2 should be used as the sole AirPlay solution.

What AirPlay 2 can do in Control4

AirPlay 2 enables the Control4 system to:

  • Receive audio from any app on an Apple device
  • Automatically turn rooms on when streaming begins
  • Display song title, artist, album, and artwork
  • Allow playback and volume control from Control4 interfaces
  • Share the active stream to other Control4 rooms
  • Appear in the iOS AirPlay menu alongside Apple devices
  • Stay synchronized with Apple devices when properly configured

What AirPlay 2 cannot do

AirPlay 2 cannot:

  • Browse or search music from within Control4
  • Be started from a Control4 remote or touchscreen
  • Replace native Ryff streaming services
  • Operate without an Apple device initiating the stream
  • Be fully configured from Composer Pro alone

These limitations are defined by Apple’s AirPlay platform.
